UPCOMING FORUM:
"A Fairer Canada: A forum on Guaranteed Livable Income for All"
Tuesday, April 30, 2024 7 pm ET
hosted by Barry Morris, Sarah Higgins, Charles Barrett and Ernie Epp of the UCC GLI network
There is a way to make the world a fairer place. The time is ripe to implement a guaranteed livable income (GLI) in Canada – but there’s still hesitation, politically, socially and spiritually. On April 30, join members of The United Church of Canada’s national network on GLI to investigate why, to situate GLI advocacy in a wider context of fairness, and to find ways forward towards a livable income for all.

the math speaks for itself. The total income of canadians after recieving a basic income is lower than the total income of canadians-pre tax. It is almost like if we cut income tax people would have more money to spend than if we hand it to them after taxing them. There are no savings as some would claim. There is only consolidation of all other payouts while adding more people to the payout. This is total income vs total cost. Approximately 14.9 million canadians live on 40000$/year or less. If we gave them all 1000$/month that would be 14.9billion$/month or 178.8billion dollars/year. Canadian budget for 2023 was 456billion$. 32million canadians over 17. At 1000$/month is 32billion/month or 338billion/year. Canada federal budget 2023 was 456billion. Rent in canada is 1500$/month for 1 bedroom a month. Math does not add up. People will be getting money we cant afford to give them and they will still be homeless, or the very starving with a roof. Who benefits from basic income? Who collects the rent? Who owns the stores you buy food from? the rich oligarchs and the bankers. rent is 1500$/month for a 1 bedroom. This means if you get 2000$/month from basic income you have 500$ left over. Now intrest rates increase causing mortgages to increase. Now rent is 2000$/month. The government has 2 choices increase basic income or institute rent caps. If they institute rent caps property no longer becomes an investment class. Meaning that the rich no longer fund housing. If they increase taxes more people will need basic income. to compensate for the lost revenue from taxation Basic income will allow people to buy property? No. To buy a property it will cost far more than what basic income will provide. If you have enough income to afford a property than you wouldn't need a basic income. With automation and ai on the rise there will be less conventional jobs available. This means there will be a bottleneck in the service industry, skilled trades and entrepreneurishp. Traditional jobs will be very competitive. many people who are not motivated to get off basic income or unable to with the limited jobs available means property ownership will for many never be possible. whos wealth are we redistributing? If you think you will be able to tax the rich more than they already are. The rich have always had enough money to support the lower income. In the past we called it serfdom. The other thing you should remember is once they are giving people their money do you not think they will lobby the government to dictate how you spend it? Think about it. A guy who makes 500,000$/year gets taxed 165,000$/year. With that tax the government can pay 6 people 2000$/month for an entire year. The same guy now walks downtown and sees 6 homeless guys shooting heroin bought with the 2000$/month basic income. He says to himself was the basic income not supposed to stop this? So now he tells the government they need to do more or they will stop supporting a basic income policy. More charts showing various models www.facebook.com/share/p/fweAcT44eBctxJ7f/?mibextid=oFDknk Fraser Institute www.fraserinstitute.org/article/the-expensive-truth-about-a-universal-basic-income The best things we can do is. Teach natural law and that mans law is immoral. Mans law prevent us from living freely from the earth unadulterated. This means its immoral to own property or prevent people from living from the earth with regulations, decrees, permitting or laws. We must Build a life outside the system While Destroying the system with logic, reason and common sense. The future is unwritten We are the writers.

Happy Birthday, Lois! Please join us in wishing a happy 97th birthday to the Rt. Rev. Lois M. Wilson, former United Church Moderator (1980-1982) and former Senator. By our count, that makes Lois the oldest living former Moderator, and she remains active in work for a guaranteed livable income, and many other social justice causes. Recently, a radio documentary was shared honouring Lois Wilson, in case you missed it: ow.ly/oNko50Rasc5
We share our prayers and best wishes for Lois, along with deep gratefulness for her significant contributions to the United Church, Canada, and the world.
